Piobaireachd Instructional Videos by Jimmy McIntosh, MBE
James (Jimmy) McIntosh was born in 1925 in Broughty Ferry, Scotland, and he passed away in South Carolina, USA, in 2021 at age 95. At age 14, Jimmy’s father enlisted him in the Cameron Highlanders, where he studied under P/M Willie Ross and P/M Donald MacLeod. He later studied piobaireachd with P/M Robert Brown, MBE and P/M Robert Nicol, Royal Pipers at Balmoral Castle.
During the 1960s, Jimmy won first prizes for Piobaireachd and light music in all top competitions, including Inverness, Oban, Braemar, Skye, and London. He designed the Naill pipe chanter, and he founded the Competing Pipers Association in Scotland, serving as its President for six years. In 1982 Jimmy emigrated to the U.S., and in 1990 he founded the B.A. degree program in Bagpipe Music at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, PA, retiring in 2010. During his career, Jimmy continuously promoted Piobaireachd in his teaching, writings, and recordings. In honor of his service to piping throughout the world, he was awarded the MBE from Queen Elizabeth II in 1994 and the Balvenie Medal in 2002.
Jimmy was one of the most influential bagpipers of the 20th century. It is an honor for The Pan American Piobaireachd Society to present his piobaireachd teaching videos.
